The Deity of Jesus Christ

The greater our understanding of Who and What Jesus Christ is, the greater he  becomes in our minds and hearts.  The greater he becomes, the greater is our faith in him.  The greater our faith is  in him, the greater the peace, joy, and hope in our daily lives as we rest upon his promises and faithfulness.

Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
(John 20:26-29 ESV)

“My Lord and My God”

Before we can fully appreciate the Old Testament accounts of Jesus, we need to fully understand that Jesus claimed to be God.  The extended quote below is to help you in your understanding. You can spend the time  looking up the references in your Bible if you like.  It will be time well spent.

[The following block quote is from the “Reference Notes” of The Scofield Reference Bible, Copyright, 1917, Oxford University Press.]

 Christ Himself affirmed His deity.

(a) He applied to Himself the Jehovistic I AM. (The pronoun “he” is not in the Greek;

Compare (Joh_8:24); (Joh_8:56-58). The Jews correctly understood this to be our Lord’s claim to full deity. (Joh_8:59).  See also, (Joh_10:33); (Joh_18:4-6) where, also, “he” is not in the original.)

(b) He claimed to be the Adonai of the Old Testament

(Mat_22:42-45).

(c) He asserted His identity with the Father;

(Mat_28:19); (Mar_14:62); (Joh_10:30); that the Jews so understood Him is shown by; (Joh_10:31); (Joh_10:32); (Joh_14:8); (Joh_14:9); (Joh_14:17); (Joh_14:5).

(d) He exercised the chief prerogative of God [the forgiveness of sins];

(Mar_2:5-7); (Luk_7:48-50).

(e) He asserted

omnipresence; (Mat_18:20); (Joh_3:13)

omniscience, (Joh_11:11-14); when Jesus was fifty miles away; (Mar_11:6-8);

omnipotence; (Mat_28:18); (Luk_7:14); (Joh_5:21-23); (Joh_6:19);

mastery over nature, and creative power; (Luk_9:16); (Luk_9:17); (Joh_2:9); (Joh_10:28).

(f) He received and approved human worship,

(Mat_14:33); (Mat_28:9); (Joh_20:28); (Joh_20:29).

There are many sources where you can get more information about the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Web has many such sources.  I recommend an article at the Institute For Creation Research.

Do not let theology overwhelm you.  All you need to understand is “What Is.” The “Why It Is” and the “How It Is” will take care of itself as your knowledge of the Bible continues to grow.  For now, just understand that Jesus is the I Am, our Lord and our God.

Jesus, the I Am
